Introduction
As I was growing up, I had a lots of friends around me to play with and learn from. But then I noticed that some of the grown up kids started behaving in a very strange way...they were not interested in games or even in talking to us...we often even heard them fighting with their parents on top of their voices...sometimes over money and most of the time over issues like not going to school, having strange friends, smoking, drinking etc. One day I heard the sad news of one of the boy's committing suicide by jumping off from the balcony of his house on the 13th floor in Mumbai. Later we learnt that he had fared very poorly at school although he was a very bright student. His parents were shattered. His mother was simply unconsolable.
It came as a rude shock to all of us who used to play with him.
It was assumed by many that it was all because the boy was into drugs.
I wondered what it was all about and if there was some hope for those already affected by it. That is when I decided to try to know as much as possible about it to try and get to the root of the problem. When I investigated further I had many questions like
What are drugs?
Where did these drugs come from?
How are they affecting our lives?
How can we fight against it?
We did a survey in a rural area and an urban area. The purpose of the survey was to understand what people know and feel about drugs, especially tobacco, and how they react to social changes in adolescents who are into drug abuse. During the survey we also tried to see the efforts the government was taking to erradicte smoking and drug abuse.
